Ive stayed pretty quiet today. Ive watch almost no TV because when I turned the one in my hotel room on this morning I was greeted with images of burning towers. The first time I saw those images I was at the Marriott in downtown Chicago. My room on the 45th floor had a spectacular view of the then Sears Tower. It was a day none of us will ever forget. I visited that same hotel on 9/11 a couple years ago during a trade show I was attending. I sat at the lobby bar and told my friend Shelby Sapusek my 9/11 story and then she told me hers from the perspective of a journalist. We all have those stories. They matter and shouldnt be forgotten. Ive had the sad honor of visiting the 9/11 memorial twice in the last couple years, once as the guest of a first responder. I visited those twin towers as a boy and a man several times during the first 37 years of my life. When I visited again for the first time with Cheryl Raffel we witnessed something that drove me to years. Two teenage girls etching a name from the memorial. They were joined by a few gentleman wearing first responder t-shirts. We speculated that these girls were etching the name of a relative. Maybe their father and the first responders fire or police brother. Between that and finding names on the memorial followed by and her unborn child I just could hold it together any longer. Honor the fallen by remembering them. By remembering that freedom is not free. But also remember the day was not all sadness. That same day gave the world my friend Genevieve s son Reed. Now a teenager. I wish you all a peaceful life filled with love and laughter.
