Ive suddenly realised that if shed lived Ann Lovett would be more or less my age. The interest in the observation isnt really so much to do with me but with the fact that it was that age cohort that stood up to SPUC a few years later in the Student Unions V SPUC case and from whom a lot of the core organisers came from over the next decade, which in terms of what went before was the decade of change. If you were 13-17 in 1984 it perhaps shouldnt be surprising that the death of Ann Lovett had a lasting impact that left many determined to take down the institutions responsible. Progress in Ireland, it would appear, has to be driven by the bodies of women. Its an awful truth but it seems their deaths are the requirement for people to stop accepting the unacceptable.
