Ive wanted to post something about my experiences in preproduction - TopicsExpress

Ive wanted to post something about my experiences in preproduction and production of The Sauce. As Ive considered this, however, Ive been forced to admit that the subject is too large for me to encapsulate. Therefore, Ill be posting a bunch of stuff about it over the next days and maybe weeks. If youre interested, just stay tuned. Let me begin with Elizabeth Spear, my co-director, co-producer and partner in crime. Elizabeth Spear is an extraordinary artist, which means two things: She has exquisite talent, but she also has an iron will. No one has ever achieved what shes achieved on talent alone, or on hard work alone. To work on her set (and it was her set) is to be in the middle of a kind of paradoxical whirlwind of precision. She has what in basketball is called court vision: she knows what every player on the floor is doing, where he or she is located, what the right play is, and how to execute it. Fact: Elizabeth does not wait for the automobile to come to a full stop before exiting it. Fact: Elizabeth filters out useless questions and pointless distractions without appearing to take notice of them. Fact: Like the San Antonio Spurs, Elizabeth will always pass on the good shot to take the great shot. Fact: While I was collapsing into my sofa after each long day, Elizabeth was cooking dinner for the crew. Elizabeth is a directors director. She has mastered the wide array of largely unrelated skills that make up the job: Directing requires as much technical expertise as it does artistic sensibility. Its as much a management and leadership role as it is a personal act of creativity. Its amazing to me that any one person can master everything required, but she has. And Im hugely grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from her.
