Ive wanted to share something for a few days now but couldnt find the words to describe. I hope I do now. The house Im living in required new shingles. The insurance company said they couldnt cover the house (ha! No pun intended) until it was done. Panic ensues. The weather is changing. The funds are not around for this. So, since its gotta happen, supplies are bought. My roommates dad agrees to help. He has done roofs before. Thank the good Lord. He realizes that it does not just need shingles. They were going to put new ones right on top of the old ones but turns out there is water damage on the plywood underneath and some rot. Needless to say, stressful. My guy roommate gets up there late in the day. I get home from work and he has another guy I dont know up there with him scraping more than 25 year old shingles that were nailed to the roof. They work until they cant see anymore. Next day is Friday and his dad gets new plywood and brings it over. That night the stranger and my roommate and another neighbor work again until dark tearing shingles off. The next day I go out to help clean up the shingles that are scattered about the yard. There are men there that I dont know trying to get this job done. Its like a well oiled machine or an orchestra of people all on the same page. Heres the thing. The stranger from Thursday night is our next door neighbor. Another guy and his 14 year old son are over for the second day and they literally work as long and hard as we who live there are. My point is that this was such a stressful thing and people we havent ever said hello to are just, like, there. Spending two nights after work and an entire Saturday making it come together. The impression this had on me is overwhelmingly reassuring of human kindness. Neighbors recognizing needs. Its what its all about folks. A fine moment.
