Ive wrestled about what to say. Not because Im that important and people must hear my voice but because I hate reactionary activists who find this as an opportunity to benefit their platform. If you only speak and care about #Ferguson (the issues that create a Ferguson) one day out of the year when it’s trendy, then you are a culture vulture and part of the problem, ultimately. Three months from now, when its no longer trendy, your personal #Ferguson will still be a Black city ran by White civic leaders and patrolled by officers who most likely dont live in the neighborhoods that they are paid to serve. Our schools will still be terrible with parents who dont volunteer. Our prison systems will still profit off unjustly imprisoning young black men and women for nonviolent crimes for which others manage to escape jail time. The small businesses will still be owned by people who dont invest in the community. And meanwhile, most of the community’s inhabitants will be solely concerned with the Presidential election and not local policies. What will you do to change that!?!? Social media has its place! But real life doesnt happen over social media and real change takes time. Lets be patient and change the narrative. I have work to do. And likely, so do you.
