Ive written to Mr. Frailey and hope Dr. Medrano is going to be treated fairly. If the posting of this link to a Christian website is the reason for Dr. Medranos leave, would the Merry Christmas Bill passed in Texas protect against this kind of retribution? It is my understanding that enews is primarily utilized by parents, not students, as it is for those who have a valid email on file with the schools registrar. It is also my understanding that House Bill 308 protects our right to acknowledge traditional winter holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah on school grounds. The unanimously passed House Bill 308 allows public schools to use holiday greetings and display religious symbols on school property, so long as more than one religion, or one religion and one secular, symbol are also reflected. If similarly applied to information shared on school enews, the web page seems to be in line with the mandates of the bill. The web page for the article on the Crosswalk website has secular and non-secular symbols and information. It provides a link to the NetSmartz website which says it is a workshop under the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (a secular organization with Congressional Authorization and Federal Funding) in addition to the mention of several biblical passages. Secular symbols for Facebook, Twitter, and Google appear on the page in addition to the symbol for the Crosswalk organization which is the combination of the secular symbol of someone walking and religious symbol of the cross. A parent always has the option to read enews or not. A parent has an option to click on any link provided in eNews or not. Once a parent has clicked on an enews link and arrived on the linked webpage the parent has the option to proceed with reading the information or not. I am not aware of any mandates by Seven Lakes Junior High to require a parent or student to read or not read enews or the referenced linked material in enews.
