Iziko Museums of South Africa are African museums of excellence that empower and inspire all people to celebrate and respect our diverse heritage We are seeking to appoint motivated employees in the following positions: NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS PHOTOGRAPHER: NATURAL HISTORY DIGITIZATION PROJECT (three-year fixed-term contract position) Basic Salary Range: R192 336 – R260 268 per annum, plus benefits Requirements: Three-year diploma in photography • Five years’ experience as a photographer with extensive experience of studio photography and digital photography (portfolio of work required – 10 pages maximum) • Proficient in use of specialist image editing software. Key Responsibilities include: Forming part of the NRF Natural History Collections project team to photograph, under studio conditions, thousands of objects in the Natural History Collections, ranging from insects to elephants • Editing and organize images • Achieving a productive work flow • Assisting with other photographic needs in Iziko. EXHIBITIONS DESIGNER: NATURAL, SOCIAL HISTORY AND ART COLLECTIONS Basic Salary Range: R192 336 - R 260 268 per annum plus benefits Requirements: Three-year university degree majoring in Exhibition Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Fine Arts or Architecture • Talent for producing imaginative, original, captivating and engaging exhibition designs • Capabilities in interior design, graphic design, and multimedia design • Interactive design capabilities would be an advantage • Experience in managing complex design-related projects • Ability to work in a constructive and contained manner with team members and stakeholders • General knowledge of, and interest in, Natural History, Social History and Art. Key Responsibilities include: Producing exhibition designs that captivate audiences and meet specified functional requirements • Working from a design brief and fine tuning requirements from constructive interaction with stakeholders such as curators, collection managers and educators • Designing and laying out of text and images for exhibitions and related media • Producing interactive displays • Testing designs in terms of their intended impact on target audiences • Implementing approved designs through procurement of necessary materials and expertise as well as working with, and advising, professionals working on different aspects of the exhibition. REGISTRAR: NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS PROJECT (one-year fixed-term contract position) Basic Salary Range: R142 656 – R193 008 per annum, plus benefits Requirements: BSc degree • Detailed experience in working with Specify databases including ability to use Specify Workbench • Experience in working with Natural History Collections • Proficiency in digital editing of images. Key Responsibilities include: Forming part of the NRF Natural History Collections project team to process images and incorporate them into the Natural History image bank and the Natural History Specify database • Handle other bulk data imports into Specify database • Verify data on Specify database • Undertake other tasks related to the growth and refinement of the Natural History Specify database • Assist with other needs relating to Natural History digital resources. RESEARCH ASSISTANT: NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS PROJECT (two-year fixed-term contract position) Basic Salary Range: R83 904 – R113 484 per annum, plus benefits Requirements: Grade 12 • At least three years’ experience of working with museum natural history collections • Experience in working with Specify databases. Key Responsibilities include: Forming part of the NRF Natural History Collections Project team by working with the photographer to fetch, arrange and return natural history objects for photography • Assist with photography • Assist with editing and organizing images • Assist with incorporation of images in Specify database. ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT Basic Salary Range: R114 912 – R155 508 per annum, plus benefits Requirements: Grade 12 • At least three years’ administrative experience • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public • Proficiency in taking minutes essential • Computer literacy • Valid driver’s licence. Key Responsibilities include: Providing administrative assistance to department and secretarial support to Director • Performing reception duties • Keeping record of expenditure • Managing petty cash • Organizing meetings and taking minutes • Maintaining databases • Updating website content • Scanning documents and images. SOCIAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS CURATOR SOCIAL HISTORY Basic Salary Range: R279 132 – R377 652 per annum, plus benefits Requirements: Masters Degree relevant to South African Social History • Three years’ curatorial experience in a museum with proven ability to manage projects • Knowledge of historical house museums. Relevant museological knowledge with a proven record of research excellence and publication • Computer literacy • Valid driver’s licence. Key Responsibilities include: Delivering on curatorial and research functions in relation to the Social History collections • Developing the Social History collections • Communicating specialist research findings to the public through publications, exhibitions, popular articles, website and public programmes • Turn around strategies for period house museums and coordinating curatorial aspects of these museums in Iziko • A knowledge of textiles and costume would be a bonus. SOCIAL HISTORY & ART COLLECTIONS REGISTRAR: ART AND SOCIAL HISTORY PROJECT (three-year fixed-term contract) Basic Salary Range: R142 656 – R193 008 per annum, plus benefits Requirements: Grade 12 • Three to five years’ experience working as a museum registrar • Understanding of museum collections records management • Knowledge of collection database programmes and digital image archiving • Knowledge of rights and reproduction practices • Computer literacy at an intermediate level • Valid driver’s licence. Key Responsibilities include: Delivering on the functions of a registrar in two collections departments • Keeping abreast of digitizing and database developments • Keeping the acquisitions registers and documentation up to date • Assisting colleagues in both departments and the public with information and support as required.
