I’d like to use this page to initiate a thoughtful and healthy discussion concerning one particular aspect of the CRAB, and I’m inviting Town officials and Bill Eubanks to please help address the matter by commenting below. Much of the CRAB’s inspiration has been attributed to Greenville’s Main Street with its pedestrian-friendly layout. However, whereas Main St. is a two-lane street with diagonal, on-street parking and functions as a destination, Coleman Blvd. has a five-lane section and serves as one of the Town’s two car arteries. It’s difficult to go much more than 100 feet on Greenville’s Main St. without coming to a pedestrian crosswalk, yet on Coleman Blvd. crosswalks are few and far between. Once the traffic circle is installed in front of Royall Hardware, there will not be a signaled crosswalk between Fairmont Avenue and all the way to Rifle Range Road – almost one mile. This point is driven home on a daily basis as I see residents of The Boulevard dodging cars as they jaywalk to Starbucks. Any attempts to solve this issue, however, would invariably further clog traffic. Please address what appears to be the on-the-ground reality that a real “Main Street” atmosphere will be difficult to achieve without cutting off Coleman Blvd as an artery or increasing the already heavy congestion on Coleman. Please also address how adding thousands of new apartments and hundreds of thousands of square feet of commercial space to a main traffic artery enhances the quality or feel of Coleman Blvd. I ask that only those with some productive ideas to share post in the replies so that Town officials can have a clean forum to comment. Admins please delete any inflammatory replies.
