I’m Nicole Martini - singer, songwriter, aspiring author, sarcasmist and inventor of words. Now, I’m aware this should be written in third person by a professional copywriter and include pretentious statements like ‘for unforgettable music with a dash of style, you cannot ignore the smoky, sultry vocals of Nicole Martini’, but here’s the ugly, unglamorous, unfabulous, truth… I’ve been singing since as far back as I can remember. I was one of those obnoxious children who watched too much ‘Playschool’ and learnt all the songs and character names (yes Jemima and little Ted, you shan’t be forgotten). After my 14000th rendition of ‘Incy wincy spider’, either my parents needed an hour of silence or legitimately saw potential and plonked me into vocal lessons Along the way, I developed a great sense of pitch, hand picked techniques from the vocalists I admired and invented my own sound and style. I somehow got to a point where people wanted to hear me sing, nay, even PAID me to. I have gigged at a many impressive places that include belting out Etta James at the ANZ stadium with my sassy jazz quintet Martini Rouge, to the much more modest setting of my grandparents’ hideously woggy 50th wedding anniversary where a shameful, tear provoking rendition of Celine Dion’s ‘My heart will go on’ did in fact, take place. When it comes to music, a quote I live by is ‘explore everything, keep the best.’ I can and will sing everything with conviction from Justin Bieber to Stevie Wonder and get lost in it with my whole heart. But Jazz is my thing. I like to think outside of the box, and jazz is the only genre that really lets me sing outside of it too.
