I’m asking for your support in re-electing me to serve as School - TopicsExpress

I’m asking for your support in re-electing me to serve as School Trustee, representing Area A, and all the children of the district. I have first-hand knowledge of the benefits of community-based schools and I want to support initiatives to strengthen and sustain these schools. I’m up to speed on district issues. I want to continue to focus on student achievement and community-partnership programs that support student success. I know that our teachers do a great job teaching our children the skills, concepts and content they need to meet the student learning outcomes proscribed by the Ministry of Education. But I also know that public education needs to include parents and public advocates more actively. The challenges many of our students and their families go far beyond the classroom material. Moreover, public education has been starved and it is hard to provide the range of staff and resources needed to support our learners. We need to build our partnerships and empower a broad community movement for our Comox Valley`s future. In the last term, I reached out to the CV Cycling Task Force to initiate Active Travel to School Comox Valley, a pilot project to get children walking or riding bikes to school. The project is now whole-heartedly adopted by the School district as part of the mandate of a new District Sustainability Coordinator position. I championed this project on its own merits, but also because it was a way to demonstrate the benefits of partnerships with the municipal governments, RCMP, Highways and public partners. Ive been a leader in developing a framework for community engagement and encouraging the board and administration to reach out more to parents, students and public supporters. I was appointed to the Boards new Student Health Committee, which I see as a way to work with partners on the physical fitness and mental health literacy of our students, as well as the social development programs, such as community schools, gardens, outdoor education and service activities, that are so important for student success in academics and character- development. Many initiatives were cut short by the recent labour dispute, but I look forward to continuing with this process if I am re-elected as your representative for the public voice in public education.
