I’m going to Baltimore tomorrow to say goodbye to a friend. Jim has been my dearest friend since 1983 and has been the source of a great deal of strength, joy, and humor the entire time. Once, when my teenage daughter had run away from home, Jim came to my house and sat with me through the night while I worried about where she was. I finally fell asleep that night laying on the couch and Jim spent the night sitting on the floor next to me and holding my hand. When my daughter was finally brought home Jim quietly excused himself and left me to deal with my daughter myself. Then, as always, he was a true friend. We shared a birthday together and shared so many other insights into each other that sometimes we didn’t even need to explain to the other how we felt about something – we just knew. We have listened to each other complain about things that were going on in our lives and shored each other up when we thought the bottom had dropped out. We “spoke” just about every morning via Instant Message and he sent me off to work laughing over some silly thing he had said. We have been friends in the truest, purest form of friendship and I will never have another friend like Jim. I truly hope and pray that Jim survives his illness, but I’m told that it is unlikely that this will happen and so I will go to see him tomorrow, tell him I love him and hope to see one more smile from him before we say goodbye. And I know that when he passes away I will have one more angel in heaven watching over me.
