I’m going to talk about art biz for a bit here. To be “successful” in many art forms it is not just about what you know and what you can do, but rather who you know and what connections you have with people. You still have to go in and sell yourself but sometimes in order to get through the front door, you have to know someone on the inside who can let you in. Therefore, my advice to your lovely offline artists is to build bridges and make connections through as many means as you can (internships, odd jobs, etc). Establish connections with people. It is way easier to do that online though. The art community on facebook is a perfect example. Being honest, I’m not the biggest fan of the art I see on facebook. I’m not gonna get into the big analysis of the art floating around the art community though. However, I will say that I’m really only a fan of one artist on facebook now. Anyway, the art community on facebook is a good example because everyone sort of knows everyone. Artists become friends through these pages, share each other’s work, and even create fanart for each other. (Not to mention the bandwagons that float around.) Connections are established, page likes increase, talent is recognized, etc. Even though connections are made, artists will still have to sell themselves by putting original content out there. It is easy (if you pay attention, at least) to see how these artists within the community influence each other in their work. I think its interesting.
