I’m looking forward to participating in my first gubernatorial election as a resident of the VI with great interest. My 4 year learning curve has been dramatic and fascinating and has animated my curiosity going forward. There are great issues that are critical and must be addressed and there are issues that are not so critical but are essential to determine the future of the territory. One of the issues that animates my curiosity is whether there is popular interest to explore the feasibility of pursuing constitutional American citizenship for Virgin Islanders, which would enable the territory to vote in presidential elections. Or whether the current VI status of statutory American citizenship is agreeable to the general public and should be sustained. I suspect that if constitutional citizenship is pursued in the future other issues such as the status of the VI as an unincorporated territory, and the development of a constitution, etc. I don’t expect that the question of constitutional citizenship vs. statutory citizenship will be a campaign issue therefore, I await hearing from the respective candidates for elective office relative their campaign platforms…
