I’m not someone who ever posts to receive sympathy or pity on social media so please read my entire post if you’re going to read this because I have an entirely different point to make. On New Year’s Eve I was leaving a bar in Des Moines outside the Funny Bone Comedy Club that my girlfriend and a few of my close friends were celebrating at. As we were driving out of the parking lot there was a big delay in traffic. Later on we found out that there was a large 40 person fight that happened and was mostly over race. My girlfriend noticed one of my very close friends lying on the ground unconscious. I immediately rushed out of the car and went to grab him off the ground and get him into our car. As I was picking him up 6 black men approached me and punched me in the face with brass knuckles as I had both arms under my friends’ armpits. (I later found out he had been knocked out after trying to go back into the bar to get his coat and then was dragged out into the street). The worst part about all of this was that within 50ft from where this happened a police officer was in sight. While spitting out blood I went to the officer’s window and pounded on the glass. I yelled for help and asked why they were not doing anything. The lady police officer cracked her window down 3 inches and listened to me ask for help (yelling I admit). She then rolled the window up and drove away from me. I cannot explain the helpless feeling I had to have this happen. My girlfriend had to sit in the car crying helpless as the law enforcement did nothing. I stumbled around yelling for help and spitting out blood. Once another one of my friends came to help my friend that was knocked out on the ground I went to the ER. It is astounding to me that a police officer not only didn’t get out and help, but didn’t even have the gall to call someone else to come help. They could have apprehended the person or persons who hit me. I am now going to be responsible for all of my dental bills which I am sure will be expensive. The number one point I want to make in all of this is all the attention that police brutality and racism is getting in the news (and always has) generally takes a biased side. There are people who can be downright awful (black, white, or any race) and it makes no different if theyre a common citizen, a police officer, or a person of great power or authority. All I can say is we need more people in this world who will do what is right and use their power for good. Thanks for reading.
