I’m not sure if this bad news or good news for Delaney. Maybe Michelle Ratcliffe or Melissa Whitney can let me know. I happened to have a conversation with a guy who is a professor of biology, who specializes in evolutionary biology and genetics. So naturally, I asked him why I’m so darn tall. Mom isnt tall, and Dad wasnt tall. However, my moms brothers were tall. She has two X chromosomes, and one apparently carries tall genes while the other carries short/ normal alleles; shes expressing the short version (generally speaking, though we carry two copies of every genes, we only express one). John Westhoff, Andy and myself inherited an X chromosome from your mom with the tall genes, and since us boys only have one X chromosome, your body essentially has no choice but to express those tall genes. Here is where Delaney, Melissa and Michelle come in. Since the tall gene came from the X chromosome, then Delaney definitely inherited it from you (since shes female, XX, she receives an X chromosome from each parent, and you only have the one X chromosome she could have inherited). So, that’s why my brothers, and my two nieces are tall. Now, here’s the question – how can I start preparing my daughter for life as a 6’ tall woman?
