I’m so Trenton….I remember walking to Elementary School and to Ms. Chandler’s to get some treats. Walking to and from the Little League ball field and the clanking sound of my cleats. Getting Groceries at Abernathy’s, Piggly Wiggly or Ingram’s IGA. Life was good in a small town and we all lived it that way. Riding my bike from Brownsville Street to Taylor Street, the Babe Ruth field and back. I never worried about gangs, thieves or being attacked. It was 1972 and the Brady Bunch was alive and well. When was Mr. King going to deliver the mail? Our School spirit flourished and I was filled with so much pride. Pep Rallies in the old school gym brought tears to my eyes. Those tears came when the Alma Mater we’d sing, made me think of my family before who had done the very same thing. Family tradition. Being proud to follow in the steps my brothers laid. You see, life was good in a small town and we all lived it that way. Homecoming Parades and Friday nights at Freed Field. A hayride in October when the autumn air was chilled. A cheeseburger at Cotton’s and a quick game of pool. Then Saturday nights at the ole’ Drive-in, who’s in the next car to you? Waking up early Sunday mornings to plant my butt in a church pew. These were the things we did in Trenton, for in a small town, that’s just what you do. Limo King racing around the court square, Dale Earnhardt would have beat him if he’d only been there. You see, I’m so Trenton, not for the things I’ve said or done, but because it’s a small town and I was lucky enough to grow up in one. Not just any one though. One filled with pride and where our children could safely play. One where life was good and we all lived it that way.
