I’m still wearing my Yes badge, and my Yes posters are still in the windows, but I think the 45% thing is a dead end for several reasons: • The 45 harks back to the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, an ethnic monarchist movement – completely at odds with the modern social democracy we want. We need to look forwards, not backwards. As English Scots, the Jacobite reference is particularly irrelevant. • It pits “us”, the 45%, against “them”, the 55%. This is counter-productive – we need to reach out to those who voted No and convert them to Yes, not make enemies of them. • As events unfold, Better Togethers lies are being exposed, prompting people who voted No to move to Yes. Only by continuing the persuasion can we build majority support. We need to get to 60% support for Yes, to make independence inevitable. I say our campaign should still be called Yes, not 45. Yes is inclusive and we still need to win hearts and minds.
