I’m sure you’ve seen the Facebook discussions in the past week or so where many are taking issue with Jesse Eisenberg as the new ‘Lex Luther’ in the upcoming ‘Batman vs. Superman’ movie. Just like the uproar over Ben Affleck in the role of ‘Batman’. These choices by director Zach Snyder (who is also one of the writers) may cause some concern and pause for Superman and Batman aficionados but I wonder if the concerns are needed. For me I know that I truly have no clue as to how the director wants to portray these characters and these particular choices may fit well into his vision. Some have suggested his choice of Ben Affleck as ‘Batman’ indicates his vision of this character to be older and more experienced. In a recent statement the director promised that Eisenberg would take Lex Luther “in some new and unexpected directions”. Does this mean the concerns are unwarranted? Not at all, but we should probably remember that not knowing the director’s vision and story dynamics, and the actor’s abilities to portray a role as the director envisions means we are reacting to something we might not understand. I think back to when Michael Keaton was cast as ‘Batman’ in the 1989 movie. Why director Tim Burton would cast this comedic actor in that role was not understood by many fans of the comic book series. Yet his choice and vision were confirmed with the success of the movie franchise and for some the strong chin of Keaton showing from under the Batman mask was an iconic image of the super hero. And not all that long ago critics were questioning the choices of Bryan Cranston as ‘Walter White’ in ‘Breaking Bad,’ and Robert Downey Jr. as ‘Sherlock Homes’. I would suggest that the directors’ visions of these characters and choices of actors worked out pretty well. Speaking of choices, I hope you choose to come join us in putting your vision to work in the Short Film Scene event.
