I’ve about had my fill of Facethingie. I can overlook the religious claptrap and don’t mind the occasional cute pet video. It’s worth sorting past the attractive tattooed women just to get to some of my favorite friends who post intelligent and though-provoking topics. Without question, the most I’ve ever gotten from a college class was Introduction to Logic and unless Facethingie makes it a prerequisite soon, I may have to quit or at least do some serious housecleaning. The lack of critical thinking, especially from some folks I respect, is astonishing. I share a loathing of Michael Bloomberg’s funding of advocacy of gutting our second Amendment rights with a guy who runs a popular website. My friend lamented Mr. Bloomberg donating money to support candidates under recall in Colorado, but saw no duplicity in supporting the NRA for contributing money to the recall effort. He didn’t think it was appropriate for a New Yorker like Bloomberg to stick his nose into Colorado’s affairs. I reminded him that his complaint against Bloomberg is an ad hominem circumstantial logical fallacy. Bloomberg could be from Mars; it is irrelevant to the debate. You must address Bloomberg’s arguments, not his circumstances, in this case where he is from. I also pointed out that assuming the person with the most money in a political campaign will automatically win is confusing correlation with causation. There may be a positive correlation between the largest election spenders and winning elections, but that does not mean that spending more caused the election victory. Ask billionaire Michigan governor-wannabe Dick DeVos about this who outspent Jenny Granholm 4-1 and still lost. There is a positive correlation between rising summertime ice cream sales and an increase in drowning’s, but eating ice cream does not cause one to drown. Not only was my friend ungrateful for pointing out his error, he became enraged and scored an irrationality trifecta, ad hominem abusive, by calling me an asshole. I predicted he would take the 14-year-old-girl approach and delete my posts. He not only deleted mine, he deleted the whole thread. I can predict the future. I was recently defriended for the sin of pointing out the inherent racism of the phrase “convicted by an all-white jury”. This phrase implies that simply having white skin precludes impartiality when white jurors judge minorities. The guy who said this is one of the least racist persons I know, but couldn’t see it even after I pointed it out. He would never conceive of saying, “Of course she is a bad driver, she has a vagina.” but stereotyping his own race doesn’t even register. “So Mr. Smarty-Logicpants, have you ever lost a logical debate on Facethingie?” you may be asking. Allow me to explain. I once made the case that opposition to gay marriage is equivalent to the opposition of interracial marriage of years ago. Unfortunately, I made this claim in a thread in which Robert P. George, a professor at Harvard and co-author of a book on the subject What Is Marriage? Man and Woman: A Defense, was participating. He sent me a copy and did a spectacular job of refuting my claim, but in fairness to myself, I haven’t taken the time to rebut. I have an impending ass-kicking extrasensory warning gauge in my head and Mr. George spiked it. If you argue with him, you better bring your clichéd “A” game or he’s going to hand you your ass on a silver platter. I disagree with Mr. George, but I respect him. If he kicks my ass in an Internet argument, I will keep it posted as a humiliating reminder, not defriend or delete him as is done so often to me. My best friends are my best friends because they have the guts to tell me the truth even if it’s not what I want to hear. Deleters and defrienders aren’t hurting me; they have no real friends only cheerleaders. They don’t know it, and that is sad.
