I’ve never eaten at this establishment so I can’t offer my opinion on it. However, I’ve been in the restaurant industry for over 25 years. I’m on the outside, too, as a wine columnist, which also puts me to work with respectable restaurant reviewers. That in mind, this is possibly the most disgustingly written and unprofessional review I’ve ever read. Not only does this Joshua Stein guy go on to a seemingly personal attack on the restaurant, but he also belittles the region where the food is inspired by. I’ve seen bad reviews and they’re never pretty – but they make sense. The duck is overcooked, the waiter was having a bad night, the hostess forgot you were waiting for a table, they lost your reservation, the prices were too high, you couldn’t hear yourself think. Details. Inconsistency. Yes, reviewers often visit twice. This guy rants on for an entire article about a “mountain hut”, why the Appalachia is such a depressing place, and then goes into a few sentences about what he wouldn’t spit out and what’s “morally hazardous”. This is not a review. It’s an attack. Personally, I think it’s pitiful The Observer would run it and even more pitiful if they let this guy write another review. I wish this establishment well and hope it’s able to turn this around.
