I’ve read several articles over the past few weeks documenting statistics that include Marijuana possession, Chicago’s murder rate, and police stops in the city of Chicago and overwhelmingly African Americans lead the way. So far this year 11,284 people have been arrested or given tickets for Marijuana possession and 8,649 of them have been African American. African Americans account for 75-80% of the homicides each year with the main victim and murderer being the black male in his 20s. Minorities are 2 and ½ times more likely to have their vehicle search by police even though they’re 2 and ½ times less likely to have contraband. I’ve also seen data about the median income in the United States and African Americans are at the bottom of the list. The average median income from 1967 to 2012 for blacks is $33,321 a year. At some time institutionalized racism needs to be address and not by Jesse Jackson, not by Lupe Fiasco, not by me, but by teachers, by parents, by influences of the next generations so that maybe the future can see pass race. At some point racial profiling needs to cease to exist and people need to be educated on the fact that all blacks you read about that make national news or all of the blacks that become YouTube sensations for ignorant nonsense or all the blacks perceived as negative isn’t a representation of all of us. At some point there has to be a shift in the culture. At some point we have to look around and start making each other accountable. At some point we have to pick each other up and carry one another. I hope years from now I can look back and see people not afraid to open businesses in black communities. I hope the murder rate is significantly lower. I hope to see black communities flourishing in wealth and togetherness. I hope to see true equality. I hope to see a drastic increase in distribution of income. I hope to see change.
