I’ve worked with several coaches in the past in an attempt to get lean. One of these experiences involved being told what to eat & when. Carbohydrates were kept to a minimum, there was a large emphasis placed on nutrient timing & cardio & my fat loss efforts revolved around restrictive eating patterns & fighting the urge to binge eat. It seemed the less I ate the leaner I got, so we proceeded accordingly. Another experience involved some form of thought being put into the amount of calories I was consuming but again there was a large emphasis on steady state cardio, restrictive eating patterns & cheat meals as ‘rewards. I was told to eat carbohydrates in the morning so that I could use them as fuel throughout the day & to soak my foods overnight before consuming them to assist with the digestion process. Not knowing much about nutrition during these times, I had no objections to any aspect of the respective processes. Fortunately, hindsight is a beautiful thing. My diets were very loosely quantified, untracked & I learned little in regards to doing things for myself. Looking back on it now as what I would like to think, a more informed individual when it comes to food consumption, I realise that many of the practices previous coaches had me adhering to were possibly ineffective & potentially unnecessary. Had I been more educated at the time, done more reading, considered contrasting methods, asked more questions & ultimately been able to assess the advice given to me in an informed way perhaps I would have challenged the methods I was using & done things differently. Does your coach tell you what to do in order to get the results you’re after OR do they encourage you to understand how to get the results you’re after while helping you get there? If your coach disappeared tomorrow, would you be in a position to continue progressing?
