J.J. Abrams did a fantastic job bringing back Star Trek from lifelessness in 2009. ... And then nearly killed it with last years Into Darkness. Thats not to say Into Darkness was a bad movie. As a summer blockbuster, I enjoyed the hell out of it. But it missed the point about being Star Trek. Much that George Lucas failed with the prequel trilogy of Star Wars, the latest Star Trek failed was not Star Trek inherent. In liking this to the Star Wars prequel trilogy, that is a level of expectations that are established and should be followed. 2009s Star Trek hit all of the beats, taking Star Trek by the roots and giving it a much-needed shot of adrenaline. Into Darkness attempted to replicate that formula, but in doing so aped the most beloved character in the whole franchise: Khan. Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch was great in the role, had it been any other role not named Khan. It was as though Abrams & Co. attempted to take the most successful Trek film to date (1982s Wrath Of Khan) and spin the yarn in a new fashion for a new generation. Sure, newer generations that did not grow up with Ricardo Montalbans Khan were surely pleased by Cumberbatchs portrayal. But Im confident that later views of the original Khan would bring about dissatisfaction for what Abrams attempted to do. That being said, I still hold no qualms with Abrams tackling Star Wars Episode VII. If he can bring back Trek for a new generation, he can do the same for Star Wars.
