J&K govt: BJP-PDP talks pick up momentum, Mufti moots new idea NEW DELHI 1 Jan 2015: Talks between the BJP and the Peoples Democratic Party over government formation in Jammu and Kashmir today picked up momentum, a day after PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti invoked former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. Ms Mufti had sent out strong hints of a possible alliance with the saffron party. PDP patriarch Mufti Mohammad Syeed talked to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over telephone yesterday, informed source told. During the talks, the Mufti is said to have suggested that not only PDP-BJP but even the Congress may be part of the government in the state as J&K is a special case where political fight is not centred around UPA verses NDA. The trump card, played by the senior Mufti, is being seen as a clever move to isolate the PDP’s arch rival, the National Conference, in the Valley and on the national political scene. Structured talks between the BJP, which emerged second largest party with 25 seats and the single largest outfit PDP, which has 28, are likely to begin in the next two days, the sources said. Both Ms Mehbooba and the senior Mufti were camping in hill resort of Gulmarg where they are talking to all the newly-elected party MLAs individually over the possible alliance and various permutations and combinations. Third major player in the state, the National Conference, won 15 seats in the 87-member Assembly while the Congress tally was twelve. Seven seats were won by other parties and independents. Talks between the two parties are being spearheaded by the BJP’s Ram Madhav and the PDP’s Muzaffar Hussain Baig. The PDP is also in touch with the Congress and others, including Sajjad Lone, among sundry independents.
