JALUO JA NYADHI Perhaps one of the most interesting and noticeable attributes common among the elite, educated or urban Luo people is their flamboyant character and sense of style, in addition to their polished and eloquent command of the English language, otherwise known as The Queens English. Indeed, the Luos are pejoratively called LuoPeans, a corruption I did years back between Luos and Europeans, Odiero (meaning whitemen, in reference to a bird that is very particular, which is called Odiero). The Luo tribe has traditionally produced many scholars and other educated persons, including some who have graduated from very prestigious Universities around the world. As a result, Luo professionals are dominant in nearly every area of the Kenyan and International economy, business and government, serving as university professors, doctors, engineers and lawyers. The Luo describe themselves with profound pride as Ochol and Rateng’), adjectives which mean “black”. For they are probably the blackest people on The Luo Nation! earth. Indeed, blackness is why the Acholi and the Collo (pronounced Cholo) are called so. Shilluk, as the Collo are also known, has the same etymology.
