JAMMU, Mar 14: Jammu-Srinagar national highway was today opened for one-way traffic, leading to passage of over 300 Kashmir-bound people stranded in Jammu following closure of the road due to heavy snowfall. One-way traffic has been allowed from Jammu to Srinagar today after closure of the highway for the past three days, an official of the Police Control Room at Jammu, said, adding that there will be down traffic tomorrow. Reports from Doda said that heavy snowfall and rains that lashed the whole of Chenab Valley region for continuous four days continuously has increased the number of problems of the masses. Huge hue and cry can be seen in every part of the erstwhile Doda district. The district Doda is facing the acute shortage of potable water, electricity supply and the road connectivity. The supply of potable water was disconnected to the many villages of the Gandoh, Marwah, Banihal, Chatroo, Inderwal, Goa-Marmat, Malwana-Mohalla, Kulhand and Dessa. Water pipelines have been damaged in several areas. Even in the Doda town the supply of water through water tankers is insufficient. Moreover, the rural areas are without supply of electricity. The electricity department has assured that the supply will be resumed within two days. Properties including houses, shops and livestock and crops have been destroyed. A number of houses have been extensively damaged due to landslides in the three districts of the region. Reports from Gandoh said that due to recent snowfall in higher reaches and heavy rainfall and flash floods, a number of residential houses have suffered damage in village Ghilkunan in Gandoh area. As per reports received, eight houses were fully damaged and others have been partially damaged. One religious place structure was also severely damaged due to heavy snowfall. The district administration while taking a prompt action deputed a team of officers in the area for immediate relief and rescue operation. The consignment of tents for temporary shelter alongwith blankets, free ration for one month and an amount of Rs 2000 to the affected families as relief was immediately provided. Block Medical Officer, Gandoh was also directed to ensure that all necessary care and medical facility should be provided to the affected people in the area. The affected families were rescued and shifted to the safer places and District Development Commissioner Doda has instructed all the Officers to remain present at their respective headquarters and redress the grievances of the people without any delay. According to SDPO Gandoh Bhushan Kumar Ganjoo few boulders alongwith slit damaged the houses. Tehsildar Gandoh Joni Kumar immediately rushed in to the spot along with BDO Gandoh. The state government said that 589 power stations and 310 residential structures were damaged due to incessant rains and heavy snowfall in Ramban district of the state. It was given out that so far as electricity is concerned, out of the 852 stations, 589 were damaged, out of which 20 have been restored and the process is in full swings in Ramban, an official spokesman said.
