JANUARY 1977 (38 YEARS AGO) Thin Lizzy: Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed b/w Old Flame (Mercury 73882) 45 single is released in the US. Written by Phil Lynott. From the LP, Johnny the Fox. Ed Rivadavia, allmusic Recorded barely six months after Thin Lizzys commercial breakthrough, Jailbreak, Johnny the Fox arrived about a year too early. Forced to cancel what had promised to be a triumphant U.S. tour in support of Jailbreaks breakout hit The Boys Are Back in Town when main man Phil Lynott was struck with a severe bout of hepatitis, the band had no choice but to return home and enter the studio instead (all the while probably realizing that its best shot at stardom had just slipped through its fingers). The resulting Johnny the Fox often sounded as anemic as Lynott must have felt, and even its best moments seemed to lack the unbridled potency captured on its predecessor. One of the few exceptions was the semi-title track Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed, which unearthed Lizzys funkier tendencies after years of abandonment. Throughout his almost rap-like performance, Lynott gleefully spews all the clichés about underworld intrigue and urban decadence he can think of, and of note, Genesis drummer Phil Collins was rumored to have taken part in the songs sessions at some point.
