JANUS AND THE REPUBLICANS Janus was a deity of ancient Rome who was usually depicted as having two faces, to represent looking both backward and forward. Now Janus can also be seen as representative of the Republican Party. After the drubbing Republicans took from Hispanics who voted in the 2012 election, they seemed resolved to finally reach out to Hispanics. Marco Rubio is their public face in the US Senate in the crafting of a new immigration bill. But this forward-looking face of the Republican party seems unable to turn the backward-looking face around. Yesterday, by a largely party-line vote the Republican-led House voted to prohibit funding for President Obama’s DREAM Act program that temporarily halts the deportations of young immigrants if they have served in the military or are attending college! I guess Republicans new-found fondness for immigrants cannot overcome their pathological rejection of anything President might propose. They are even willing to round up and deport immigrant veterans instead of giving them an opportunity to eventually become citizens. Again, actions speak louder than words. In this case, the Republican actions scream while their words are whispers.
