JB sounded angry at news conference, says Mphwiyo will speak out on Malawi corruption BLANTYRE-Malawi President Joyce Banda has said director of budget Paul Mphwiyo is recuperating in South Africa and soon after he recovers fully will explain about corruption, fraud and embezzlement public funds which led to his shooting in September and a series of arrests following looting of public funds. Banda, who sounded angry, was responding to questions from the media during a press briefing held at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre upon her arrival from the UN General Assembly, US today. “Following the shooting of the Budget Director, I knew that the fight against corruption and theft in the public service was truly underway and syndicates have now been unearthed. Relevant state machineries mandated to fight graft and theft are now investigating the syndicates to track the people involved. “I have left the matter with the Police, the Anti Corruption Bureau and other state agencies to continue with the investigations without political interference. I want to congratulate these agencies for their work so far,” she said. Banda said she is committed to fighting corruption, saying the vice has been inherited from previous government. “Corruption has been going on for the past 20 years or so. In fact, the recent K61 billion saga [Bingu Mutharika case] and K404 million cases woke me up on the plunder in the government. It’s obvious that public funds have been lost through fraud and corruption.
