JEAN SIBELIUS (1865 – 1957) Symphony No. 1 in E minor, Op. 39 (1898-99) Lahti Symphony Orchestra, conducted by OSMO VÄNSKÄ 1) Andante, ma non troppo - Allegro energico - 0:00 2) Andante (ma non troppo lento) - 9:50 3) Scherzo. Allegro - 18:48 4) Finale (Quasi una Fantasia). Andante - 23:19 I’ve always preferred the odd-numbered symphonies of Sibelius to his others, and believed from the time I first heard this imaginative and eternally fresh work that it was in every way at least the equal of his somewhat better-known and more oft-performed second. Think how different—from the symphonies of Brahms and just about every other composer audiences must have heard throughout the 19th century—this must have sounded when it premiered with the Helsinki Philharmonic at the end of the cycle! I don’t know that I’ve ever heard a more exciting, lyrical, and moving performance than what Maestro Vänskä coaxes from his forces from southwest Finland. Voi hyvää päivää!
