JEFF OESTREICH & PAT BURNS Exhibition in Pottery Cottage, the Leach Pottery 1st November to 31st December 2014 Marking the end of their month long international residency, Leach Pottery St Ives presents an exhibition of work by American potters Jeff Oestreich and Pat Burns. Jeff Oestreich trained with celebrated American potter Warren MacKenzie, who previously studied in St Ives with Bernard Leach. In 1969 Oestreich himself took up a two year apprenticeship at the Leach Pottery, and in 1971 returned home to set up a pottery in rural Wisconsin before relocating to Minnesota. Oestreich has since become a prolific and internationally recognized artist and teacher of studio ceramics. Strongly influenced by Leach and the principals of eastern ceramics, his works also demonstrate a passion for the playful, geometric forms of Art Deco. Oestreich has used clay specially imported from La Borne, France, combined with local clays to create more than 30 new works for this exhibition. Friend and fellow potter Pat Burns grew up in central Minnesota. She studied ceramics at Berea, Kentucky before training in England with respected British potter Bryan Newman. In 1974 she began working alongside Jeff Oestreich, developing her own practice and becoming strongly influenced by the Leach philosophy. The two have remained firm friends and colleagues for the past 40 years. During her residency Burns has been working with local porcelain clays on the kick-wheel once owned and donated to the Pottery by Marianne de Trey. Works in this exhibition have been faceted, inlaid and decorated with Leach studio slips. Pat Burns and Jeff Oestreich continue to work full time at their respective studios, Burns in Portland, Oregon and Oestreich at Taylors Falls, Minnesota. Join Jeff and Pat on Saturday November 1st, 6pm to 8pm for the opening of the exhibition.
