JEJU ISLAND Jeju Island, often referred to as the Hawaii of South Korea, is a volcanic island known for its unique scenery and culture. The main volcano is Halla Mountain in Hallasan National Park and is South Korea’s tallest peak at 1,950m above sea level. A popular trekking destination, the island is home to more than 1,800 plant species and thousands of different animal species. Treks to the peak for a sight of the volcanic crater take about five hours and are 9.6km length. Jeju’s volcanic past making the island’s formidable coastal rock formations well photographed attractions. Also along the coasts where Jeju is not bordered by cliffs, there are white sandy beaches with crystal clear blue waters allowing visitors to partake in water sports or swim and sunbathe. The more adventurous tourists may well visit Jeju’s caves, famous for the largest recorded lava column in the world and the Manjang Caves which are actually an extinct lava tube. Marathons, concerts and films are shown on the busy beaches in summer with world renowned resorts and locally owned accommodation proving increasingly popular.
