“JERRY BLAVAT ~ A STORYBOOK MUSIC FILLED LIFE” Article Written by: Bruce Hawes BH wrote: When a person spends nearly their entire life in the entertainment industry, surrounded by music and entertainment industry legends, then they are definitely having “A STORYBOOK MUSIC FILLED LIFE” like: JERRY BLAVAT’s. If you follow his example then your life will also be legendary and unequaled by many others, just like his has been. Jerry Blavat, the Geator with the Heater, is an entertainment industry pioneer that began his career on a local Philadelphia television station : WFIL-TV, Saturday afternoon, teenager-targeted-audience show, called: Bandstand. The show-host in 1953; was Bob Horne, with his co-host, Lee Stewart. And, the show’s producer for 10 years was, Tony Mamarella, who also founded an early TSOP recording label that he named: “Swan Records.” In 1956, Jerry began touring as the road manager of the Rock & Roll era’s hit-group, (Danny & the Juniors). Because of the early success of the “BandStand” show, and the recording community’s success, the spirit of Philadelphia stirred-up, and was inspired to do more. Then the entire entertainment community began to have success in Philadelphia, and then it began to burst the seams of the entertainment industry. Jerry Blavat was right there in the mix of it all. With Bandstand’s early success, it led to the hiring of the eventual-Dance-Show pioneering Icon: Dick Clark, who was a young looking DJ out of Brooklyn, New York. He was called in to replace Bob Horne. Once Dick Clark established himself as the host of the show, it became so popular that the ABC Television Network purchased the show, and then renamed it, American Bandstand. It was during these early days in the 1950s, that Jerry Blavat established himself and his influence with the recording, and television community. At the age 18 he worked with the legendary comedian, Don Rickles, as his valet for two years. Traveling with Don led him to meet many greats of the entertainment industry including; Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., and so many others. In 1960, At the age of 20, Jerry Blavat became so well established in the business that he had partnerships in: (Lost Nite) and (Crimson) record-labels, along with Jared Weinstein and (Collectables Records) founder, Jerry Greene. And together, the three also owned (Record Museum), a now-defunct chain of record stores based in Philadelphia. From 1965–1967, Jerry Blavat, produced and hosted his own dance television-show that he named (Disco-phonics) which was on the lines of the American Bandstand Show. In 1972, Blavat purchased a Night Club in Margate, New Jersey, that he appropriately named: “MEMORIES,” where many stars have appeared or have enjoyed the charm and musical taste of Jerry Blavat. He went on, after this time, to appear on national television. He has appeared on hit-television-shows such as: The Mod Squad, The Monkeys, The Tonight Show, and many other hit-TV-shows. He has also appeared in several movies including, Madonna’s hit-movie: “Desperately Seeking Susan,” which is one of my favorites. In1993, Jerry Blavat was inducted into the Philadelphia Music Hall of Fame through The Philadelphia Music Alliance organization. And in 1998, Jerry Blavat was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum. Mr. Jerry Blavat has nearly single-handily, and has successfully kept the spirit of Philadelphia alive. The spirit that lives within the entertainment-community of The Sound of Philadelphia has made it great from its start. And because Jerry has never quit his musical mission that began on Bandstand at the age of 13, he is now a living legend who is admired by all. Jerry Blavat is one of many who has made The Sound Of Philadelphia GREAT! In 2011 he released his new best-selling book, “You Only Rock Once.” After sixty-plus years in the entertainment industry, Jerry Blavat is still driven by his musical passion that proves that: “If, YOU ONLY ROCK ONCE, you better ROCK-well.” If you use Jerry Blavat’s life as an example, or as a role model then, you will discover that you can also have “A STORYBOOK MUSIC FILLED LIFE,” just like Jerry Blavat has had. By watching the career of Jerry Blavat explode into being a legendary one, is how I grew up in The Sound Of Philadelphia….
