JERSEY BOYS by Clint Eastwood CAST: John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Christopher Walken GENRE: US Musical drama MISS KITTY SCORE: 3.5 out of 5 Based on the Tong Award-winning musical of the same name, this film tells the story of the rise of the Four Seasons, and its lead singer Franki Valli, whose career spanned almost 5 decades. Bob Gaudio (with Bob Crewe) wrote a swathe of hits for The Four Seasons over a forty-year career including Sherry, Rag Doll, Who Loves You, Oh What a Night and Walk Like a Man. Valli had a unique voice with a strong top-end range which is difficult to reproduce, but Lloyd Young did it admirably as the lead in the stage production. Some of the songs sung in the film are original, although many use the original tracks from The Four Seasons. With such an up-beat soundtrack and successful stage show, the film had the potential to be a foot-tapper, but Eastwood is a little heavy-handed, wanting to focus mostly on the criminal activities and mob connections of the young men before they rocketed to fame. Still, if you are a Valli fan, youll enjoy the soundtrack and insight into the real lives of these stars.
