JESUP—Jesup (rated fifth in Class 2A) was the top area placer in the two-day J-Hawk softball tourney which concluded Saturday. The J-Hawks wound up seventh in the 16-team event, while Wapsie Valley was eighth, North Fayette 11th and Independence 13th. West Delaware (ranked 12th in Class 4A) won the tourney title, beating Mount Vernon in the final, 9-8. Jesup highlights Jesup opened the tourney Friday with a 9-1 win over Edgewood-Colesburg. Winning pitcher Kelsey Lough allowed just two hits and one walk and fanned 14 batters. Jesup finished with 12 hits, including four by Allison Gibbs. Lough smacked a double and a home run. Mount Vernon downed Jesup in the quarterfinals, 9-7. Lough took the pitching loss in that clash, allowing seven hits and three walks and whiffing four. Lough (who drove in three runs) and Ally Flaucher (who had two RBIs) both singled and homered in that contest. The J-Hawks concluded their tourney action on Saturday with a 1-0 loss to Waterloo East and an 11-5 triumph over Wapsie Valley. Wapsie Valley scores Wapsie Valley began tourney play on Friday with a 9-7 decision over Mediapolis. The Warriors then lost to top-rated (in Class 1A) Gilbertville Don Bosco, 11-1. Wapsie Valley dropped its opener Saturday to Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 13-3, before then sustaining the 11-5 loss to Jesup. North Fayette highlights Mount Vernon handed North Fayette a tourney-opening 11-4 setback Friday. Losing pitcher Regan Wolverton allowed 13 hits and two walks and fanned four batters. She also led her team’s offense with a triple and a single and three RBIs. Dani Jo Abernathy smacked a double. North Fayette then posted an 8-7 win over Edgewood-Colesburg. Madison Monroe, who relieved starting pitcher Brianna Bemiss in the seventh inning, recorded the win. The duo combined to permit nine hits and fanned three batters. Wolverton and Abernathy again led the North Fayette offense, with three and two hits, respectively. They each had a double among their hits. North Fayette lost in the consolation semifinal round Saturday to Decorah, 3-1. Wolverton pitched well in that clash, allowing five hits and one walk and fanning two. Five different Hawks had hits — Wolverton, Kelsey Feldman, Megan Gavin, Makayla Kaeppel and Hanna Moser (a double). The Hawks concluded the tourney with a 6-1 win over Mediapolis. Bemiss scattered seven hits and struck out five in claiming the pitching win. Wolverton capped off her big tourney for North Fayette with a home run and a single, while driving in two runs. Hayley Mork had a pair of hits, Maggie Weidemann two hits and Paige Gibson a double. Indee highlights Independence lost both of its games on Friday to Dubuque Hempstead (5-3) and Decorah (8-0). The Mustangs bounced back in their opener on Saturday, stopping Edgewood-Colesburg, 9-3. Winning pitcher Stephanie McMillan allowed seven hits and one walk, while striking out six batters. Karlie Niedert singled and doubled and drove in one run for Independence, while Paige Versluis collected a pair of singles and drove home two runs. Aubrey Nabholz doubled and drove home one tally, while McMillan and Kelsey Ratchford both finished with one hit and an RBI. Chloe Henningsen contributed a single, while Abby Goedken drove home one run. The Mustangs took command of the game early, pushing across three runs in the first inning, one in the second and two in the third. Edgewood-Colesburg and Independence closed out the scoring with three runs each in the final frame. Independence concluded its tournament competition by posting a 5-2 decision over Maquoketa Valley.
