JNUSU congratulates the student community for their enthusiastic participation in todays protest in front of the IHA meeting. After a day long argument by the JNUSU office-bearers and the hostel presidents the Dean was forced to recede on the following points- 1. The atrocious proposal by the Dean to deny hostel facilities to students in their 9B was unitedly sent back by the students inside IHA meeting. Now 9B will continue to get hostel facility as earlier. 2. The DoS office was unilaterally restricting mutual exchange facility by introducing the same course/same year of admission clause causing great inconvenience to the students. But from todays meeting the Dean was forced to take back this restriction and it has been decided that from tomorrow students will be allowed to get mutual exchange facility without such restriction as earlier. 3. In the IHA agenda, the DoS had come out with a blue-print for fine-raj by trying to impose fine of Rs2000-4000 by trying to call even JNU students unauthorised person. From todays IHA meeting it has been categorically decided that no student with valid JNU id card can be treated as unauthorised and thus can not be fined. Moreover, the amount to be paid as fine in case of any outsider staying as unauthorised guest has been reduced to Rs1000 for first time violation as earlier. 4. In case of the absence of the host (boarder) while a guest is found in her/his room, the student representatives inside were able to successfully negotiate that the extra fine will not be imposed if the host can present her/himself the next morning to authorities. 5. Given the huge amount of grievances that the students face due to an inefficient DoS and hostel administration office, the JNUSU demanded that Grievance Redressal Cell be constituted. It has been communicated to the student representatives that the existing the GRC will be made functional. Friends, these positive developments were achieved because of the united and spirited protest of the students, Todays meeting could not discuss other issues as it was adjourned. The Dean was trying to practice his old tactics of tiring out issues by his long monologues. Other important issues like other fine structures, maintenance of hostel, definition of P2 and P3 categories and other important hostel level issues would be discussed in the next meeting. Till then, the proposal of increased fine will not be implemented and status quo will prevail in case of fines. We will also have to be vigilant that the Dean is not able to backtrack on the decision of todays meeting by employing bureaucratic tricks and invoking committees like the provost committee.
