JOB OPENINGS AT THE MUSEUM OF AFRICAN DESIGN The Museum of African Design is one of the world’s newest institutions in the world, and in its first year, has accomplished a lot. Events Director One of MOAD’s most exciting assets is the series of events that engage with the public. Some are run by the museum, but others are private. The events manager is in charge of running and coordinating both MOAD’s own events (openings, popups, fashion shows), and to market and run the space for external functions (conferences, weddings, parties). The Events Director must have at least two years of events experience, and access to a car and drivers license. Interpersonal skills, project management skills and sales skills are also important. Some accounting will be required. Exhibitions Manager Throughout the year, MOAD hosts and builds exhibitions in both its ground floor exhibition hall and basement project space. The Exhibitions Manager: - Operates as the central liaison between MOAD and exhibiting artists and designers. - Oversees the creation of timelines, checklists, signage, and all other components necessary for exhibition installation. - Actively cultivates and maintains the museum’s relationships with designers, artists, curators, galleries and other cultural institutions. - Is responsible for creation of exhibition design, installation, fabrication as well as research for all possible exhibitions and special projects for the museum. - Responsible for managing MOAD’s digital archive—this entails video and photographic documentation of all of the museum’s exhibition installations and openings, events, programming and special projects. - Involved in the archival maintenance, synthesis and online presentation of information. MOAD is looking for someone who has experience working in a gallery or museum setting, with curators and artists. They must be proficient with hanging and installing works, building and fixing walls, have access to a car, and be able to project manage an exhibition from idea through archival process. INTERN AT MOAD To apply to intern at MOAD, you must be a third-year or higher varsity student, or recent graduate. Internships last for varying amounts of time, and range from 2-days a week to full time. NB: MOAD closes for the December holidays. Intern – Community This position supports MOAD’s staff and works on the expansion of public awareness about the museum. - Manages the MOAD website, and all social media handles, and acts as the point of contact for all incoming press inquiries. - Coordinates with museum’s designers to produce newsletters and promotional materials for all exhibitions, programming and special projects. - Manages photographic and written coverage of all MOAD events and exhibitions, circulates information for – reproduction. Basic photoshop skills, and a writing example are required. Should have a good social media following in a personal capacity – i.e. 500 followers on Instagram and Twitter. Intern – Visitor Services MOAD is looking for an intern who is interested in arts and cultural tourism and management. We are constantly looking at how to make MOAD an inviting and engaging institution. This person must be a stickler for detail, and be willing to reimagine the museum experience in exciting ways. This is a short-term position, which will have three phases. 1. Month of observation and interviews. 2. Month of discussion and feedback. 3. Month for a final proposal and suggestions. Intern – Retail MOAD is interested in exploring the opportunity for retail in the museum. Opportunities for a café, book store, and a design shop exist. This intern will have the chance to do market research and build a business plan for retail opportunities at MOAD. The intern must be a business student or have retail management/accounting/business background. Intern – Content MOAD is interested in a third year or recent journalism graduate who is interested in art and design to help grow our blog and content stream. Lots takes place at MOAD on a weekly basis, from workshops, to events and exhibitions. We want a passionate storyteller to help us share all of this online.
