JOB OPPORTUNITY: Charter School of Inquiry (CSI) HEAD OF SCHOOL JOB POSTING SUMMARY The Charter School of Inquiry (CSI), a newly authorized K-6 charter school with a whole school approach to inquiry-based learning, has extended the search for its first Head of School. CSI’s board of trustees is looking for an exceptional leader, one who will bring life to the school’s mission of achieving breakthrough outcomes for Buffalo’s children. The successful candidate will (1) have a steadfast belief in the ability of urban, and particularly low-income urban children to excel, and a demonstrated track record for making it happen; (2) have a strong passion for, and deep understanding of inquiry-based learning embodied through a thematic interdisciplinary curriculum; (3) engage, motivate and inspire teachers and students to be excited about teaching and learning; and (4) welcome parents and the community as active partners while weaving them into the fabric of the school. JOB DESCRIPTION The Charter School of Inquiry’s Head of School / Educational Leader is responsible for aligning all school activities with the school’s mission to achieve breakthrough outcomes for children. The successful candidate will promote effective communication among staff, parents, students and community members to foster a culture of shared responsibility that works in the best interests of children; set high expectations for children and staff; establish a fiscally viable school with resources directly aligned to support student achievement, and; include teachers and parents as partners in decision-making and student outcomes. The successful candidate must have the demonstrated ability to create an inquiry-based learning environment characterized by high levels of transparency, shared leadership, collaboration, organization and efficiency. Responsibilities: • Observe, motivate and inspire teachers and staff to excel in implementing CSI’s mission. • Serve as staff to the Board of Trustees and provide leadership and direction to staff (including contractors, consultants, faculty and staff). • Create a welcoming and collaborative environment for the faculty and staff, parents, children, and guests of the school. • Facilitate parent engagement and participation in the school. • Maintain an effective school climate to create a safe environment conducive to learning. • Develop relationships with community stakeholders and agencies to support the school. • Serve as liaison between parents and teachers, the staff and the Board. • Recruit, evaluate, and develop and manage staff with approval of the Board of Trustees. • Implement and follow policies and procedures as ratified by the Board of Trustees. • Ensure proper fiscal administration, including budgeting, accounting, auditing, and financial planning in compliance with NYS Charter School Law. • Participate in planning and recommend changes in policies and procedures as required. • Coordinate the collection of data required for the preparation of reports. • Make formal reports to the Board of Trustees and the NYS Board of Regents. • Administer scheduling, enrollment and curriculum. • Serve as staff to Parent Association and Faculty Association • Coordinate all administrative transactions, including the provisions of personnel services, record keeping, reporting, inventory, purchasing, etc. Minimum qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning NYS certification as a school administrator or equivalent credential in another state with a requirement to complete the NYS certification process before the start of school in August 2015. Five years of successful work in a school setting, with a minimum of 3 years working in an urban elementary school. Experience in early literacy and inquiry-based instruction highly preferred.
