Position Available: Diversity, Inc. is a unique coalition of local Governments addressing issues impacting multicultural communities, impeding the sustainability of diverse residential housing, a unitary housing market, promoting equity in the Chicago Southland. Located in Chicago’s southern suburbs In partnership with the Illinois Department of Human Rights our educational component is being expanded to provide workshops both the metropolitan and downstate areas of Illinois. AFFIRMATIVELY FURTHERING FAIR HOUSING Background: The AFFIRMATIVELY FURTHERING FAIR HOUSING (AFFH) Partnership Project is a one year HUD-funded grant project consisting of curriculum development and seven separate training sessions each one day-long to be conducted in the Chicago area and regional locations around the state, organized to encompass all 47 entitlement communities in Illinois. The aim of the training is to provide local governments with the necessary information and tools so that they can be successful in moving their communities towards stable integration. The training sessions will target municipal officials and managers, as well as fair housing advocates, housing providers, other members of the housing industry, and other community members, leaders and stakeholders, including religious and civic leaders. The goals of the training session are: 1) To publicize the HUD AFFH regulations; 2) To educate members of the community of the regulation’s requirements; 3) To educate municipal officials, housing industry practitioners, and community members on best practices in moving towards a stable, integrated community; 4) to provide participants with an opportunity to discuss local housing issues specific to their communities, as well as possible solutions; and 5) To publicize IDHR and other resources, including educational and enforcement programs. The Project Assistant, working for Diversity Inc., will cooperate with the IDHR Fair Housing Project Division Manager and project partners (Center for Multicultural Studies, and the South Suburban Housing Center), and in consultation with HUD officials to: • Research and develop a curriculum for Illinois municipalities around affirmatively furthering fair housing. • Build on curriculum developed by Diversity, Inc. in cooperation with the Center for Multicultural Communities, o Provide a historical context for the discussion about race and segregation, o Include fair housing training on federal and state laws and local ordinances, as well as discussion of zoning, building codes, reasonable occupancy, crime free housing, and other actions of municipalities that can serve as barriers to a free and open housing market. o In addition, the curriculum will include information on best practices of communities that are working towards sustainable patterns of integrated living. The Project Assistant, housed at Diversity, Inc., will collaborate with the project partners and HUD to develop the training curriculum and materials; locate training venues, organize all aspects of the training sessions, promote and evaluate the training sessions; conduct the training with designated partners; and prepare reports on project activities for HUD including budgets, receipts and outcomes. Both positions will also perform other outreach and education duties as assigned. Experience preferred in fair housing education and outreach, curriculum development, planning/project management, and grants reporting. Position is grant funded for a period of one year.
