JOB SEEKERS, especially the long term unemployed individuals... See email below from Ben Seigel. He is the Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for the Employment and Training Administration at the U.S. Department of Labor. He has some good info below that you should take a look at. From: Seigel, Benjamin - ETA [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 31, 2014 5:57 PM To: Seigel, Benjamin - ETA Subject: Addressing Long-term Unemployment at the White House Dear Friends, A couple of weeks ago I emailed you about a meeting Labor Secretary Perez held with 14 long-term unemployed individuals, where he listened to their experiences and challenges (social.dol.gov/blog/dispelling-the-myths-of-the-long-term-unemployed/). Today at the White House we took action on this issue. In the East Room, President Obama addressed more than 150 workforce leaders, job club leaders, company CEOs, labor leaders and nonprofit and foundation executives to talk about immediate actions the White House and the Department of Labor are taking to address long-term unemployment, including: (1) partnering with private companies to review hiring practices so as to give long-term unemployed individuals a fair shot, (2) making sure the federal government does the same, and (3) announcing an upcoming Department of Labor grant competition called Ready to Work Partnerships that will support innovative public-private efforts to support the long-term unemployed. Following the President’s remarks, Labor Secretary Perez moderated a panel with four workers who were formerly long-term unemployed and are now succeeding at good jobs thanks to local workforce development programs. DOL funded programs from New Hampshire, Kentucky, Illinois, California, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Wisconsin were highlighted and also included in the report linked below. Please see the materials below, and as the President said today, this isn’t a one-off. We look forward to continuing to engage with you on this terribly important issue.
