JOCV tackles Solid Waste Disposal in Dehiwala Mr. Ryo Iino, a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer’s (JOCV) mission is to solve the problem of managing the solid waste (garbage) in Sri Dehiwala. He has been working at the Dehiwala City Hall since September 2012. Mr. Iino has two main activities. One is informing everyone the need and importance of sorting out the waste. The other is the promoting and spreading the word among the residents of Dehiwela on the Takakura-style composting method that was developed in Japan. The composting method uses available bacteria to covert waste to make compost. So far, 3000 households are continuing to sort out their trash, and 80 households are using the Takakura-style of composting in Dehiwala. The disposal of solid waste is an acute problem in Dehiwala. The current status of the Karadiyana landfill site is one example. On arrival at this site, you encounter piles of garbage right up front. This dumping site receives solid wastes not only from Dehiwala city but also from other neighboring areas as well. Two years from now, this landfill site will be overflowing with solid waste without any more space for filling. A new solution is urgently needed for this serious problem. Mr. Iino is due to complete his assignment period and leave Sri Lanka in 5 months but the staff at the landfill site do not want him to return to Japan. They value the great contribution he has made to their work as well as to the people of Sri Lanka. His strong efforts to tackle the solid waste problem has resulted in him establishing a deep bond and trust with the Sri Lankan people. Mr. Iino is determined to do his best to improve the waste disposal problem during the rest of his tenure. (Written by Kazushi Yamagata, an intern at JICA Sri Lanka Office)
