JOE GATTO ANNOUNCES RUN FOR DES MOINES CITY COUNCIL (DES MOINES) – Today, local small-business owner, Joe Gatto of 15 East Creston Avenue, declared his candidacy for the Des Moines City Council seat for the Fourth Ward. “The people who make up the Fourth Ward have provided me and my family a great place to live and work,” said Gatto. “I want to restore our neighborhoods to a place where all residents have that same opportunity.” Gatto’s priorities include: (1) ensuring the safest and most secure neighborhoods; (2) demonstrating fiscal responsibility and accountability; and (3) providing common sense leadership for community growth. This is his first attempt at public office. Gatto, 46, is lifelong resident of Des Moines and a graduate of Lincoln High School. He is married to Ann (Baker) Gatto, and together they have three children. They attend Grace Church on the City’s East Side, where he volunteers his time to the Awana program. Since 1993, Gatto has successfully operated Baratta’s Italian Restaurant on the City’s South Side as part-owner. He currently serves as a member on the Polk County Board of Adjustment as well as participant in the committee to revitalize the Southwest 9th corridor. Gatto is also known to many as a coach for youth football and baseball teams. “Joe has deep roots in this community,” said Phil Barber, owner of Brewer meats. “I can’t think of anyone who would be more committed to seeing our city grow and prosper.” The city council seat will become vacant when current council-member, Brian Meyer, is sworn into the Iowa House of Representatives later this year. The Fourth Ward encompasses the southern and eastern portions of Des Moines.
