This is an interview which Joe gave to the Evening Express which is an newspaper in Scotland. Former X Factor winner Joe McElderry has made a career in singing but according to the him, he didnt always get top marks in music class. One of my school reports actually said that I was horrendous at music Joe said with a laugh. I loved drama, but I was terrified of being on the stage. I would do anything to avoid it and honestly couldnt think of anything worse. One day it clicked and I realised that I actually enjoyed it. Joe will be heading for Aberdeens Music Hall next month as he stars in An Evening of Movies and Musicals on April 18 alongside a host of singers including Lorna Luft - the daughter of Judy Garland. The 22-year olds career has seen him take on a host of new challenges since he won ITVs X Factor 2009. And Joe went on to win Popstar to Opera Star before conquering Channel 4s The Jump. I tend to throw myself into things hence The Jump. Two days into a skiing holiday in Austria I got a phone call asking how quickly I could get to another resort. The producers knew I was in the country and needed someone who could ski, so the next day I was on the slope competing said Joe, who flung himself the furthest distance off a ski jump to win the shows final. I really enjoy doing stuff like that in fact I would love to do Strictly Come Dancing. Im a frustrated dancer so I would love to be taught how to do it properly. With energetic tour routines, Joe is no stranger to choreography and admits to pulling some funny dance moves from time to time. Sometimes when the musics going I can get into the zone and come out with some funny dance routines, but its all good fun. As well as being passionate about music and dance, Joe loves to run and is in training for the Great North Run. I do a lot of running I enjoy it and nobody wants to see me puffing and panting on stage - you have to be very fit to do a tour schedule and each night is like a workout. Talking about his progression from a popstar into a classical singer, Joe said Im still finding myself as an artist and I think my albums reflect that. Artists change and become more experienced and confident as time goes on and I think thats how you stand the test of time - by reinventing yourself eventually. He added I never thought I would have gone through the changes I have, but the pop side of music nowadays can be so throwaway. The classical side is so much more heartfelt - you can see peoples breath being taken away by a song like Nessun Dorma and Time To Say Goodbye. My first home. I grew up with my mam in a flat in South Shields. The place has a lot of community spirit which I really like about it - thats one of the reasons Ive never moved away. I absolutely love London but when Im there I miss being able to walk two minutes round the corner and arriving at a family members house - its important to me to have everyone I love close by. My first school. I loved school. I went to Mowbray Junior School, which has now been knocked down and turned into a housing estate which is a shame. Im not a very academic person but I was very well behaved and even if it was wrong, I always had my homework in. I hated being late and was always known as really well behaved but a chatterbox you couldnt shut me up, and that used to be written on all my reports. My first holiday. We do a lot of camping as a family, even now, and my first holiday was a trip when I was young, to Pooley Bridge in the Lake District. We stayed in a camper van at the side of the lake and had songs around the campfire, toasted marshmallows and played hide and seek in the forest with flashing torches it was terrifying. My first job. I was a dishwasher in a restaurant in a theatre. I used to wash the dishes and when they served dessert I would take my apron off and go out and sing for the customers for about 25 minutes. When they finished eating I would put the apron back on and go and wash the dessert dishes. I used to come out at the end of the day with white hands with blisters all over from having them in the water all day. My first TV programme. I loved Friends, Will and Grace, Coronation Street and EastEnders. I was obsessed with soaps from a really young age and I used to watch Friends every morning without fail before I went to school. Everyone has such a connection with that show and I was devastated when they shopped showing it. My first film. I dont remember any film as such but throughout my childhood I was obsessed with the Wizard of Oz. I knew the whole script off by heart, word by word, song for song and scene for scene, everything. My first music. The Spice Girls! I loved them and had a big poster above my bed. Emma Bunton, Baby Spice was my favourite. I even had Spice Girls trading cards and I bought the tape cassette of their greatest hits that shows you how long ago it was I still have the Spice World movie on VHS. My big break. It was definitely the X Factor, it was my platform into the industry and it was a huge deal for me. I never thought in a million years that I would get past the first round but now here I am. The show gets a lot of stick now but I applaud anyone who goes on it because theres a lot of hard work involved. You have to look at it as a platform - its not the end of something, its the beginning of something. Im not a complacent person - Im a hard worker and Im realistic about things, so I was always ready to work for it. Home : Still South Shields Last Holiday: Near Innsbruck Autria, which was a couple of days holiday before it turned into me going on The Jump. Its a beautiful place. Favourite TV programme: Brothers and Sisters. Im watching it. Last music listened to: Farrell Williams, Happy. Its a good running track. Regrets if any: Its not good to have regrets it means youre looking too far into the past. If anything I just try to learn from any good or bad experiences and learn how it can be better. Every time this boy is interviewed he, just like his singing, gets better and better.
