JOEM FOR NEW LOCOMOTION WINTER STEAM GALA Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon is delighted to welcome back guest locomotive Class J72 No. 69023 Joem owned by the North East Locomotive Preservation Trust. The locomotive will feature in the forthcoming event at the museum the ‘Winter Steam Gala’ on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 February, 2015. The ‘Winter Gala’ will be themed around Edith Nesbit’s ‘The Railway Children’ with a selection of locomotives displayed together that have featured in the television and film adaptations of the story– including guest locomotive “Joem” and GWR No. 5775. The new event will give fans of rail steam a third steam gala event to enjoy at Locomotion – a lovely winter warmer for the month of February. Visitors will be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of guest locomotives - with a locomotive in live steam and locomotives on display from the museum’s own collection throughout the event. The special guest engine in February will be the locally loved locomotive J72 69023 or “Joem” on loan from the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG). “Joem” is a North Eastern Railway (NER) E1 Class locomotive (later London North Eastern Railway J72 Class). They are a very characteristic of a North East locomotive having been used in shunting yards, railway owned docks and coal staithes all over the North East. The locomotive arrived at Locomotion on Friday 9 January, 2015 and will be on display in the Collection Building until late March. Great Western Railway locomotive No. 5775 is on loan to Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon from its home on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. It is well-known to both rail fans and film buffs who still hold an affection for the 1970 classic film The Railway Children. The British drama film adaption of Edith Nesbit’s book starred Dinah Sheridan, Jenny Aqutter, Sally Thomsett and Bernard Cribbins. The locomotive was recently cosmetically restored in Locomotion’s conservation workshop and returned to the fictional livery as seen in the film. In addition to guest locomotives there will be a large variety of trade stands within Locomotion’s Collection building.
