JOHANNESBURG – Eskom says the power system is expected to be under severe strain this morning and widespread blackouts are expected from 8 am to 10 pm. This week the parastatal declared two power supply emergencies. Energy expert Chris Yelland says Eskoms latest announcement could take South Africa back to the 2008 crisis when widespread blackouts took place. Yelland says there has been a severe technical failure at the Majuba Power Station, which is one of the utilitys largest coal fired power stations. “Stage one of emergency load shedding means 1,000 megawatts have to be shed rotationally across the country and that indicates the severity of the situation.” Yesterday, Eskom said the country’s power supply is stable following last week’s power supply alert. On Thursday the utility had to instruct customers to cut down 10 percent of their electricity usage to avoid widespread blackouts. (Edited by Refilwe Pitjeng)
