JOHN CARPENTER ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK This is the second to last review of Carpenters films Im going to do here. Released in 1981 and co-written, co-scored, and directed by John Carpenter. The film is set in a then-near future 1997 in a crime-ridden United States that has converted Manhattan Island in New York City into a maximum security prison. Prisoners are simply dropped in and left to do whatever they want. Ex-soldier Snake Plissken, Kurt Russell again in full Clint Eastwood mode - is given 22 hours to find the President of the United States who has been captured by prisoners there after the crash of Air Force One into the prison. After the 22 hours a small explosive injected into his blood stream will detonate hence giving him added incentive!! This is one of the few Carpenter movies which wasnt a total flop and despite having a budget of only 6 Million Dollars went on to gross a massive $25,244,700!! And it still went on to be a Cult Favourite! This is one of may favourite JC movies and a good balance between gritty and cheesy. Also Im pretty certain the character of Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid games was based on this movie. Incidentally my dad always hated the character of Snake Plissken, , said he liked Kurt Russell normally but thought his role in this movie was plain ridiculous, he really hated the glass and grit voice he used. . . https://youtube/watch?v=ckvDo2JHB7o
