JOHN COLTRANE NOW ON BLITZ MAGAZINES WEB SITE: The idea that an artist (even a remarkably prolific one) who passed away nearly a half century ago would still have unreleased material remaining in the vaults is nothing short of miraculous. But such has proven to be the case with the highly prolific and enormously influential saxophonist, John William Coltrane, who succumbed to liver cancer in July 1967. Less than a year prior to his tragic passing (and despite the fact that he was already beginning to experience the ravages of the disease), Coltrane and his recently revised ensemble (which included fellow saxophonist Farrell Pharoah Sanders, wife Alice Coltrane on keyboards, drummer Rasheed Ali and substitute bassist Sonny Johnson, sitting in for long time Coltrane associate, Jimmy Garrison) bared his soul in a landmark performance at Temple University in November 1966. While bits and pieces of what is now available as the two-CD Offering Live At Temple University were previously issued in bootleg configuration, this Resonance Records collection presents for the first time that historical event in its entirety. Editor/Publisher Michael McDowell takes a closer look at how Coltrane came to terms with his Maker in that electrifying session, in the Reissues/Anthologies section of The Shape Of Things To Come column on Blitz Magazines web site: blitzmag.blogspot/2007/01/the-shape-of-things-to-come-reissues.html. And here is an eight-minute documentary, produced by Resonance Records, in which Coltranes son, Ravi and others discuss the ongoing impact of this legendary artist: https://youtube/watch?v=pZQAwahDL8A
