JOINT EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT STATEMENT Townships of Barnegat and Ocean, New Jersey Weather Statement - Severe Thunderstorms Wednesday, June 12, 2013 - 8:00PM A strong storm system will bring the likelihood of severe weather to the southern New Jersey area on Thursday. This weather system will produce strong to severe thunderstorms that could be accompanied by heavy flooding rains, large hail, strong damaging winds and dangerous lighting. At this time, weather forecast are calling for rain to start Thursday morning and last into Friday morning. The most severe weather will be experienced Thursday afternoon through Thursday night. One to four inches of rain will be common in the region along with the chance of greater amounts in the area of strong thunderstorms. Flash flooding is a distinct possibility and the Thursday evening commute will be adversely impacted by the storms and accompanying flooding rains. Motorist are urged to exercise caution when driving on Thursday and to allow for extra time to reach your destination. Residents are urged to monitor weather forecast on Thursday. Take the necessary precautions this evening for the approaching severe weather and move inside or secure outside items which could become projectiles in the strong winds. Also, power outages could occur with the severe weather so charge all cell phones, computers and other portable communications devices prior to retiring for the evening. Area utility companies are prepared for the severe weather and will respond accordingly. Be alert for approaching severe weather on Thursday. The Townships Barnegat and Ocean will monitor weather forecast and conditions on Thursday and issue additional weather statements if conditions warrant.
