JONATHAN YABUT..YOU ARE HIRED! As the mega hit tv series THE APPRENTICE, Asian version, concluded last Wednesday (July 31, 2013), another Pinoy pride has been marked in Asia’s business community history. Jonathan Yabut, Filipino representative, was proclaimed as the very first “Apprentice Asia.” As a Filipino, this is really something that we should be proud of. I have been a big fan since the start of the show, and I would say that Jonathan was one of my favourites ever since. I’m not being biased with my judgment just because he’s our ‘kababayan’ but because I’ve seen how he exemplified excellence from the very first task. To those of you who don’t watch the said show, The Apprentice Asia is a business reality tv show, first became popular in U.S. then U.K. and now, took turn in the Asian market. It was hosted by Asia’s top business tycoon, Mr. Tony Fernandes, participated by 12 professional representatives from the different countries in Asia. Philippines got two representatives, Jonathan, being one, alongside with Celina Le Neindre, who was later fired during the seventh episode of the show. I, as a viewer, would say that both Yabut and Le Neindre were in fact great assets of the show. Both of them were strong contenders. Though, it really was a tough competition because all the candidates had their own share of strength in different areas— special mention to Singapore’s representative lawyer Andrea Loh. She was also one of my favourites and managed to be on the final two with Jonathan. I would say that Andrea is really the biggest competition of Jonathan. In fact he said she is his female-version. She is very witty and had outstanding statistics since the beginning of the show compared to Jonathan. But still in the end, because of his burning passion for the position as Tony’s apprentice, Jonathan was able to bag the title. No more questioning on that, with emphasis I’d say he really deserves to get the spot. Ok. My favorite episode of the show was week 9, it was when the top 4 was being cut down to the top 2 finalists. The contestants had to undergo series of interviews from high profile businessmen who were Mr. Fernandes’ closest friends/business partners. It was this episode were I became mostly proud of Jonathan. All answers that were thrown to him, he answered it all strongly, confidently and with passion. Even the interviewers were convinced by him, and even I, as a viewer. On the later part of this episode while they’re already at the board room, this guy mentioned his humble beginnings, how he managed to finish his education (primary, highschool, college) all through scholarship programs. He came from nothing but he was able to make it BIG. He even wore a Filipino flag pin, stating that he wanted to serve as an inspiration to all his kababayans, and I couldn’t agree more. In fact, Jonathan said that his victory is for every Filipino out there. He shares a lot of motivational passages/words to all of us, his kababayans, and most importantly, he, himself, is already a great inspiration. From an interview he had with one of the local channels here in PH, one thing I’ll never forget was this. “Meron akong isang favorite word sa Tagalog na walang counterpart sa English at yun ang salitang diskarte,” he said. “When you say kasi diskarte, kanya-kanyang estilo para mabigyan ng solusyon ang isang problem.”-Jonathan Yabut (courtesy of GMA news) Like Jonathan, why not find our own diskartes to solve whatever problems we have and step up on our own game. Right? Jonathan Yabut, ikaw na! We are proud of you and thank you for being an inspiration to us all. ***Jonathan signed a one-year-contract with one of Mr Tony Fernandes’ companies (AirAsia, possibly) and will be earning six-figure starting salary. “You can never be too small to dream big because dreams are for free… The power is ours to make [our dreams] happen.” –Jonathan Yabut
