JOY in the storm chasers. The tornado warning popped up on my screen around 4pm. We live about as far away from Tornado Alley as one could live, so it seemed a little crazy. As the post-football practice crew piled into the car, they bubbled excitedly with tales of tornadoes touching down in neighboring towns (none did). As we pulled out of the school driveway the sky turned a weird shade of ash brown. The winds swirled small branches and an army of leaves around each corner. After dropping off kid #1 and talking to his mom about a to-do list item, we were back on our way. A large branch got wedges under my car. As we dragged it from house #1 to house #2, it made an eerie sound: "now it really sounds like storm chasers," I suggested. At house #2, the boys crawled under the house and removed our souvenir. At house #3, that kiddo jumped out and made a dash for his door. With the 1-3 and I left to dry home, we imagined what it might be to live in an area where the weather crazies happen all the time. JOY in playing make believe storm chasers and JOY in being able to just pretend.
